Storytelling Arts is a nonprofit community of storytellers and teaching artists who believe in the transformative power of story. By listening to and learning from diverse voices we build understanding, illuminate new perspectives, and deepen connections with those around us. Storytelling Arts’ mission is to preserve, promote, and impart the living art of storytelling to build literacy, strengthen communities, and nurture the human spirit. Since its founding in 1996, the organization has provided outcome-driven literacy and social emotional development programs to schools, juvenile detention centers, homeless shelters, and community-based organizations that level the educational playing field while meeting NJ core curriculum standards. Storytelling Arts places a high value on community storytellers and believes that they hold important cultural lessons that deepen our collective humanity. In 2021, inspired by Desmond Tutu’s quote, “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together”, the organization launched the Untold Stories of Storied People Program to expand story pedagogy to include voices that have not typically been heard. Powerful Untold Story performances validate and amplify stories that define and contextualize the lives of the unheard. Members of the Untold Stories Collective engage in monthly training sessions to bring contemporary and historical social justice issues to contemporary audiences that break through old narratives to expose authentic human experiences. With a staff that includes eight storytelling teaching artists and seven Untold Storytellers, the organization is based in Lambertville, New Jersey.
